La Sagrada Família
Gaudi's unfinished masterpiece.
The Sagrada Familia, or to give it its full name, the Basílica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família is Antoni Gaudi's masterpiece. It is located in the Eixample neighbourhood, the enearthly towers rising above the surrounding rooftops. Gaudi dedicated himself entirely to this project in the later years of his life and tragically passed away before he could complete it. He nevertheless left his preparatory work and designs, though a great deal of these materials were lost to fires during the Spanish War. The Sagrada Familia is actually still under construction - the designs respect his former projects as much as possible, though there are many debates surrounding certain aspects of the work.
A visit to this monument, as well as the Park Güell and the casa Battló, all three listed as Unesco World Heritage Monuments, offer a vivid glimpse into the fantastic world of Gaudí.
